The Nassau Coliseum becomes the mariachi center of the universe Saturday, May 6, as one of the greatest mariachi ensembles on earth – Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez – teams up with NYC’s own Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino and two rising high school mariachi talents – Sebastien De La Cruz and Alexa Posas.

Under the direction of multi-instrumentalist Jose Hernandez, Mariachi Sol de Mexico is one of the premiere mariachi groups on the planet. Known for its sophisticated arrangements of both mariachi standards and its treatments of American pop classics such as New York New York, the group is in demand globally in concert and clinics. In recent years Maestro Hernandez has made mariachi education his chief focus, traveling the U.S. to work with students in classrooms and mariachi festivals throughout the country. His inspiration to the next generation is palpable everywhere the group travels, and while treated like a rock star, Hernandez’ one-on-one approach with mariachi students makes him one of the most accessible top-shelf leaders in the mariachi world.

Similarly Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino and the New York City Mariachi Conservatory set the gold standard for both performance and instruction in the mariachi world. Maestro Paulino is in constant demand as a clinician and instructor at mariachi educational gatherings throughout the country and is considered a leader and powerful advocate in the American mariachi movement.

Rising talent Sebastien De La Cruz has been one of the hottest properties on the mariachi scene since his 2012 appearance on America’s Got Talent, where he bowled over judges and audience members alike with his extraordinary vocal talents and consummate showmanship. Since then El Charro De Oro has added to his legions of fans with appearances through the U.S. too numerous to list.

Rounding out the program is another breaking star in the mariachi world, 18 year old Alexa Posas of Roma, Texas. The lead violinist and vocalist for Mariachi Nuevo Santander was voted Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S. in 2015 at the competition led by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.

Mariachi music has become one of the most popular and important educational trends in America today, with schools from Georgia to Nashville, Cleveland to California and all over the southwestern U.S. offering programs. Mariachi Education has been praised for engaging students of all background, keeping them in school, providing them with discipline, teamwork and problem solving skills and much more. It gives students pride in who they are and sets a shining example for the rest of the country.
Currently a film titled The Mariachi Miracle is in production, documenting how the evolution of youth mariachi education in one of its earliest hub cities – Tucson, Arizona – has transformed the economic, political, educational, artistic and social fabric of that city. The film will be released in 2018.

The New York May 6, will include one of the world’s premier mariachis, the region’s finest mariachi, and will showcase two rising stars. The concert will begin with New York’s own Mariachi Tapatio De Alvaro Paulino, considered the top mariachi in the northeast. They will be followed by two exceptionally talented stars in the making, Texas high school students Sabastian De La Cruz and Alexa Posas. Sebastian burst onto the scene at the age of 10 performing on America’s Got Talent in 2012 and again the following year by singing the national anthem at an NBA playoff game. Alexa has won numerous competitions and has performed with numerous renowned mariachi groups and singers. The headliner of the evening will be Mariachi Sol De Mexico De Jose Hernandez, considered one of the top mariachi groups in the world and whose many recordings includes their own powerful version of New York, New York.

This show has been organized by La Frontera and the Tucson International Mariachi Conference. The Tucson International Mariachi Conference is a nearly weeklong event that has been held annually in Tucson, Arizona since 1983. The event typically is held during the last week of April by La Frontera Arizona, a Tucson-based non-profit community behavioral health organization. The goals of the conference are to promote the music, dance and culture of Mexico; provide education to students of mariachi music and ballet folklorico dance by professional musicians/dancers/instructors; and provide a world-class entertainment experience for those in attendance. Typically, between 700 to 1000 students receive 2 ½ days of instruction prior to performing in a “Showcase” concert on Thursday evening. Among other claims to fame, TIMC is the place where renowned singer Linda Ronstadt got the inspiration for her platinum selling mariachi discs Canciones de Mi Padre and Mas Canciones.
